In Vampire: The Masquerade, the Malkavians are the clan of madness. Each of them carries some kind of derangement — paranoia, delusions, compulsions, a fractured sense of reality — but they also see things no one else can. In the tabletop game they’re seers, tricksters and prophets, as dangerous as they are unpredictable.
When Troika Games adapted the setting into Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, it could have handled the Malkavians with a couple of special lines and a few odd quirks. Instead, it practically wrote a parallel game. Two decades later, playing Bloodlines as a Malkavian is still one of the most memorable experiences in role-playing games.
Who are the Malkavians?
In the World of Darkness, every vampire belongs to a clan, a bloodline with its own powers, weaknesses and culture. The Malkavians’ curse is madness: every member of the clan is touched by it in some way. But that madness comes with insight. Malkavians are said to share a kind of collective consciousness, sometimes called the Malkavian Madness Network, through which they glimpse truths others can’t see.
Other vampires distrust them, fear them and occasionally rely on them. A Malkavian might be a raving lunatic, a calm and terrifying oracle, or something in between.
Bloodlines captures that ambiguity perfectly.
A different script
Almost every conversation in Bloodlines has a Malkavian version. Not just a few lines here and there: the clan’s dialogue was written separately, with its own tone, references and logic.
Your options are cryptic, jumping between metaphors, wordplay and half-truths. You might answer a question with a riddle, address someone by a name they’ve never told you, or comment on something that hasn’t happened yet. Other characters react accordingly:
- Some get uncomfortable, cutting the conversation short or treating you like a child.
- Some get scared, sensing that you know things you shouldn’t.
- Some play along, either amused or intrigued.
- A few start to suspect you know far too much, which can change how they treat you.
The writing is often very funny, sometimes deeply sad and occasionally unsettling. It turns even routine exchanges into small performances.
Madness with method
What’s extraordinary is that those apparently nonsensical lines aren’t nonsense. Many of them:
- Foreshadow plot twists that won’t happen for hours.
- Reveal characters’ secrets, hinting at what they’re hiding or who they really are.
- Comment on the game itself, with knowing winks that border on breaking the fourth wall.
On a first playthrough, much of this flies past. On a second, it’s astonishing: you realise the Malkavian was telling you the truth all along, just in a language no one else could understand. The clan becomes an oracle, and the game becomes a puzzle box of hidden meanings.
Talking to things
Malkavians don’t just talk to people. In this clan’s version, objects and the media also seem to have things to tell you. Early in the game, in Santa Monica, there’s a famous stop sign you can hold a conversation with. Television broadcasts and radio shows may seem to address you directly.
Are these real? Hallucinations? Messages from the Madness Network? The game never says. They’re small details, but they make the world feel alive and slightly unhinged at the same time — exactly how a Malkavian would experience it.
The disciplines
Each clan in Bloodlines has three disciplines, or vampiric powers. The Malkavians have:
- Auspex: heightened senses, letting you see through walls, detect auras and boost your perception.
- Dementation: the clan’s signature power, letting you confuse, frighten or drive enemies mad, making them attack each other or flee.
- Obfuscate: the ability to hide in plain sight, becoming invisible to most observers.
Together, these make the Malkavian a strong stealth and manipulation character. They’re not the strongest clan in a straight fight, but they’re one of the most versatile if you like sneaking, talking and solving problems creatively.
Building a Malkavian
If you decide to play one, a few tips:
- Invest in dialogue skills: Persuasion and other social skills will open even more strange and interesting options.
- Use Obfuscate liberally: avoiding fights is often easier than winning them.
- Dementation for crowd control: when you can’t avoid a fight, turn enemies against each other.
- Pick a reliable weapon: melee or firearms, invest in one so you’re not helpless when things go wrong.
- Talk to everyone: the clan’s appeal is in its dialogue, so exhaust every conversation.
Malkavian moments (without spoilers)
Without spoiling anything, some of the most beloved aspects of the Malkavian run include:
- Early conversations with the prince and other powerful figures, where your character’s remarks can be shockingly direct.
- Interactions with other Malkavians, who seem to speak a language only you can understand.
- Moments of eerie insight where you know something the game hasn’t told you yet.
Much of the fun is discovering these on your own.
For a first playthrough?
It depends on what you want.
Reasons to wait:
- If it’s your first contact with Bloodlines, you might lose part of the story among all the metaphors.
- The game’s political intrigue is complex, and a Malkavian’s cryptic perspective can make it harder to follow.
- Many of the best Malkavian lines are funnier and more meaningful when you already know the plot.
Reasons to go for it:
- If you love strange, experimental writing and don’t mind some confusion.
- If you’ve read about Bloodlines and know the broad strokes already.
- If you want the most unique version of the game from the start.
Our recommendation: if you’ve already finished it once, there’s no better way to go back. And if you haven’t, consider a more straightforward clan first — our clan guide has suggestions.
Why it still matters
The Malkavian run is a reminder of what makes Bloodlines special: a willingness to invest enormous effort into something many players will never see. Writing an entire alternative script for one clan out of seven made little commercial sense. Troika did it anyway, because it made the game richer.
Few RPGs since have dared to go so far. Install the unofficial patch, choose Malkavian and get ready to discover how much you missed the first time.
